My Favorite Place | Bar Harbor, Maine | Destination Photographer – Alison Epps Photography

Do you have a favorite place in the world? Somewhere you just dream about being, constantly? The one place that as soon as you get off the plane just feels like home on your first time visiting. For me and my husband, that place is Bar Harbor, Maine.

A little back story. In 2012 we traveled to Maine for the first time. It was August, which in Florida is disgustingly hot and humid. You step outside there and it’s a nice cool 75 degrees. Refreshing. We flew up the morning after I had a wedding and got bumped to first class, free drinks at 8am? WHY NOT!? We stayed at the cutest little cabin with an awesome view of water on the adirondacks out back. We went into the downtown and ate lobster, hiked the MOST beautiful hikes you’ve ever been on (yes, seriously!) and picked fresh blueberries, had picnics on the lawn, drank craft brews from the local breweries. Not to mention this place is a total photographers DREAM! I came back with some of the most stunning landscapes I had ever taken.

Well that was all in 2012. Ever since we left, we have dreamed of getting back. It left such an impression that we decided to have a second home up there someday in the future. I’m still dreaming of that day.

Fast forward to 2015. We are so excited to get back and bring our 10 month old for our first real family vacation. It was not quite as easy as it had been 3 years ago. First, the travel day was AWFUL! I’m talking 3 cancelled flights, bad weather delays, watching our plane take off after running through an airport with a baby to miss it by a few minutes, flying into Boston instead, luggage didn’t make it, driving up the coast 5 or 6 hours, getting to the place at 2am, freezing, getting locked out. It was less than picturesque.

June was a bit chilly. By that, I mean there were some days that did not even make it into the 50’s.. Oh and we were in sandals since our luggage was lost. A handful of disasters. I had always imagined our trip back being able to do this full on photo tour like I had done the first time. Hiking, and photographing proved to be just so difficult with a baby and the cold weather. I do have to give it up to my awesome husband who carried her and was so patient while I fumbled through 4 different types of cameras. :)

The funny things is, even with how beautiful the Maine coast is, my camera ended up pointing towards Hadley for most of the trip. I found something more beautiful than the Maine coast. She was such a trooper through the disasters of the trip, but after all was said and done we are still so in love with Maine and again, can’t wait to get back there soon.

  4. YAY! I was just there in August with my hubs for our mini-moon!!! When you go again, you should definitely pack a night picnic and drive up to the top of Cadillac Mountain for star gazing. It was magical! Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Super cute fam btw. No wonder you took tons of pics of that little lady – she’s precious!
